When we travel to new places, how much do we really see?
Whenever we travel we are in many places at the same time; we might be there, but we are often also somewhere else. At the same time, travelling to a new and unfamiliar place does not necessarily mean that we will see it any clearer. Our experiences are influenced by our expectations.
In my images I combine enlarged fragments of postcards with fragmentary pieces of texts. The texts reflect fleeting moments experienced while visiting the different cities. Like the postcards, these phrases are odd little pieces of information which I picked up while travelling. When combined, the texts and the images create a new imagined place. They begin to tell another story. What was once a clear image is now a pattern of coloured dots – a part of an invisible whole, extracted from reality in much the same way that the texts were. From these patterns new stories are revealed; but these stories are as impartial and incomplete as the ones from which they were taken.
